Visit to Ericeira
We pick you up in your lodging and drive to Mafra. This small town, 30 Kms Northwest from Lisbon, is the home to the largest National Palace in Portugal.
Built in the purest baroque style, by order of King John V, out of a promise made to Our Lady of Conception, that if Maria of Austria would give him an heir, he would build a monastery.
The construction begins around 1711, and thousands of people are camping in front of the working site, bringing stone from Sintra area, and building a fabulous monument, UNESCO world Heritage since 2019.
Composed by a basilica with six different organs and 128 church bells, a monastery with room for 300 people, and the Royal Palace itself, Mafra Palace is the place where our last king spent his last night in Portugal, in 1910.
It was also the venue for the wedding of one of his descendants, Maria Francisca de Bragança, in 2023.
It also has a magnificent library, with nearly 30 thousand books from the 15 and 16th Centuries, written in animal skin, preserved till today because of a small animal that lives there.
After the visit we drive to our winery cellar, for our lunch and afternoon.
We will tour the winery with an expert explaining all about the grape varieties and production methods.
Then, we will have a delicious and elaborate meal, and will enjoy the pairing of their best wines, made also by experts.
The surrounding view is delightful, and the mood will surely be good.
After lunch we can also visit the wine shop, for those wanting to take a souvenir home.
We end this lovely afternoon with a drive to Ericeira, only World Surf League Reserve spot in Europe, for a photo opportunity at Ribeira D’Ilhas.
The day will be completed after we drive you back to your lodging, with some very nice memories form your holiday.
