Braga’s origins are deeply engraved in time. It was already an important city during the Roman Empire, Bracara Augusta was its name.

For centuries it has been the headquarters for the Primaz of Spain, the most important Bishop in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Cathedral church has been celebrating mass on a daily basis for over one thousand years now.

The Treasure Room displays ancient jewels over a millennium old.

The city of Braga became a row model for Jewish inclusion, for some generations, until the reconversion in the 16th Century.

After the Cathedral and Treasure visit, we will do a Walking Tour around the old Jewish district, trying to spot some influences still visible.

After a rich Portuguese lunch we will drive to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Braga, and ride the oldest lift in Portugal. Dates from the 18th Century and it still operates with hydraulic power.

We then finalize our day with a visit to Sameiro Sanctuary, one of the most beautiful religious sites in Portugal. Built and rebuilt since 1863, the final version is completed already in the 20th Century. Visited by the Pope John Paul II, who awarded a golden rose to this Marian worship monument.

Drive back to Porto or transfer to Lisbon (consult for supplementary fare.)
